Item An in vitro comparative assessment of antidiabetic efficacy(Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, 2024) Mary Adharshna S.P.; Arul, VettrivelBackground: Homoeopathic mother tinctures are gaining attention for managing diabetes by inhibiting key enzymes in glucose metabolism. Objective: This study aimed to compare popular homoeopathic mother tinctures Abroma augusta Q (AAQ), Cephalandra indica Q (CIQ), Gymnema sylvestre Q (GSQ), Momordica charantia Q (MCQ) and Syzygium jambolanum Q (SJQ) with Metformin (MET) in inhibiting diabetes associated α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. Methods: Mother tinctures AAQ, CIQ, GSQ, MCQ, SJQ and MET of concentrations 10 μL/mL, 50 μL/mL, 100 μL/mL, 250 μL/mL, and 500 μL/mL were assessed through α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory assay. Results: All mother tinctures show significant inhibitory action at p < 0.01. AAQ and GSQ exhibited potent inhibition of both enzymes, with inhibitory percentages ranging from 70.41% (500 μL/mL) to 58.98% (10 μL/mL) for α-amylase and 68% (500 μL/mL) to 43.72% (10 μL/mL) for α-glucosidase and 73.98% (500 μL/mL) to 63.66% (10 μL/mL) for α-amylase and 65.31% (500 μL/mL) to 25.99% (10 μL/mL) for α-glucosidase, respectively. AAQ has an IC50 value of 107.9 μL/mL (α-amylase) and 43.87 μL/mL (α-glucosidase) which makes it evidently, a potent antidiabetic mother tincture. Conclusion: AAQ and GSQ demonstrated significant inhibition of diabetes associated enzymes when compared with METItem Lateral venous ulcer treated with Homoeopathy using a miasmatic approach(Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, 2024) Moorthi, Karunakara; Reshma, P.Introduction: Loss of all or a portion of the dermis, as well as the epidermis, causes an open sore known as an ulcer. Venous leg ulcers are late signs of venous hypertension and chronic venous insufficiency. Long-term ulcers are difficult to heal and lastly opted for skin grafting and surgery conventionally. This case report provides insight into the treatment of venous ulcer with homoeopathy using the miasmatic approach and helps to provide evidence for further research in this area. Case Summary: A 61-year-old female presented with ulceration near the lateral malleolus of her left leg for the past 6 years. The non-healing ulcer was successfully treated with homoeopathic treatment within 1 year. After case taking, Syphilinum 200C was prescribed considering the miasmatic expression, resulting in symptomatic improvement and Calendula Q externally for an initial 30 days as supportive care followed by Sulphur 200C toward the end of treatment. Homoeopathic medicines led to a remarkable improvement, it was measured using the leg ulcer measurement tool along with photographic evidence and Modified Naranjo Criteria for Homoeopathy. Conclusion: The result was encouraging, exclusively with Homoeopathy medicine; yet, for stronger evidence, more extensive, rigorous research projects are required.Item Homoeopathy in the treatment of tinea cruris and tinea corporis(Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, 2024) Mittal, Renu; Prusty, Akshaya Kumar; Shivadikar, Ashish; Taneja, Divya; Kumari, Noopur; Kaushik, SubhashBackground: Dermatophytosis is a fungal infection affecting keratinised tissues such as the epidermis, hairs and nails. It is particularly prevalent in tropical regions due to favourable conditions for fungal growth, such as warmth and humidity. Dermatophytes metabolise keratin leading to various pathological clinical presentations, such as tinea pedis, tinea corporis and tinea cruris. Case reports, case series and studies published on treatment of tinea corporis add to the evidence-based effectiveness of Homoeopathy in treatment of the condition. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the therapeutic efficacy of individualised homoeopathic medicines in the clinical management of cases presented with tinea cruris and tinea corporis. Methods: The present case series includes 26 cases of dermatophytosis. KOH mount test was used as the diagnostic tool for confirming tinea infection. Clinical Cure, Skindex-16 and Global Evaluation Response were the main outcome assessment tools. The causal relationship between intervention and outcome was assessed through MONARCH criteria. Results: Out of 26 cases, nine cases (34%) experienced complete disappearance of lesions, 14 cases (53.8%) showed symptomatic improvement and progression of lesions was seen in three cases (11.5%). The collated data of these 26 cases showed a significant reduction in mean Clinical Cure Composite Score (pruritus, erythema and scaling) (p = 0.000) and Skindex-16 composite scores (p = 0.00) were observed. Conclusion: This series provides evidence supporting the usefulness of Homoeopathy treatments for dermatophytosis, particularly tinea cruris and tinea corporis. Employing clinical assessments, standardised evaluation metrics and photographic documentation ensures a thorough and objective evaluation of treatment usefulness and patients’ quality of life.Item Role of homoeopathic medicine in the management of psoriasis(Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, 2024) Chaurasiya, Priya Bablesh; Chaphekar, Priya Gauri A.; Ingale, Sailee V.Introduction: Psoriasis is a common chronic, recurrent, immune-mediated disease, where plaque-type psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis show 90 % and 7% prevalence, respectively. It is a cosmetically expressed condition that impacts the individual and the family, thus affecting quality of life. It impacts the physical, emotional and psychosocial well-being of the sick individual. It accounts for up to 3% of the World’s population. Although this condition is not life-threatening, it is challenging to treat due to the lack of established causative factors. Conventional medicine offers long-term treatment with a short-term benefit to patients with psoriasis, resulting in discontinued treatment by the patients. Case Summary: A 46-year-old male presenting with psoriasis was treated with homoeopathic similimum Arsenicum album and intercurrent remedy X-ray. The periodical assessment of the treatment was done before and after the treatment and using the PASI score to ascertain the prognosis. As psoriasis is a chronic and recurrent condition, the severity index shows changes over 11 months with slight aggravation in the lesion at the beginning of winter. The Modified Naranjo Criteria for Homoeopathy (MONARCH) tool was used and a score of +9 suggested a possible causal attribution between the intervention and outcome. The above assessment was strengthened with pictographic evidence. This case report reinforces the role of Homoeopathy in the management of psoriasis using a homoeopathic similimum and an intercurrent remedy.Item Efficacy of Ferrum metallicum 30C in restoring menstrual cycle in polycystic ovarian syndrome patients(Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, 2024) Jerin, J. P.; Nayak, Chaturbhuja; Karthikeyan, D.; Rajagopalan, MaanasaBackground: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age, with the prevalent clinical symptom of irregular menstruation. Objective: This trial assessed the efficacy of Ferr. met. 30C in restoring the menstrual cycle among PCOS patients. Methods: A randomised, placebo-controlled, single-blind trial was conducted at outpatient departments of Sri Sai Ram Homoeopathy Medical College and Research Centre, Chennai. Patients were randomly allotted to the experimental (Group I - Ferr. met. 30C) and control (Group II - Placebo) groups. Quality of life of patients in both groups was assessed through PCOS Questionnaire scale at baseline and at 6th month. Results: Sixty-five patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to Group I (n = 33) and Group II (n = 32). The menstrual cycle got regularised in 48% of Group I patients and 29% of Group II. Data were also compared to see the menstrual restoration period in both the groups. About 48% of participants in group I and 29% in group II had their menses restored after homoeopathic intervention and the difference between the groups was found to be 1.81 (p < 0.05). Improvement in menstrual cycle before and after intervention for patients in both groups showed a significant difference after the intervention (higher in Group I than Group II), confirming the efficacy of intervention in the experimental group: p < 0.05. Conclusion: This trial suggests that Ferr. met. 30C could be effective in restoring the menstrual cycle in PCOS patients. Rigorous trials and independent replications are warranted.Item Utility of individualised homoeopathic medicines in improving social interaction in childhood autism(Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, 2024) Nair, Sreeja Kudukayil Radhakrishnan; Gilla, Deepthi; Devasia, Mohan NarvelilBackground: Childhood autism is a pervasive developmental disorder. There has been an upsurge in its prevalence in past few decades. The social deficit is the most disabling symptom of autism. There is an immediate need to explore new interventions to effectively address childhood autism. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the usefulness of individualised homoeopathic medicine in improving social interaction in childhood autism. Materials and Methods: This one-year duration study was conducted in the outpatient department of the National Homoeopathy Research Institute in Mental Health, Kottayam, Kerala. Thirty-five children fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of childhood autism (as per ICD 10-F84.0) were enrolled. Individualised homoeopathic medicines were prescribed in centesimal potencies following homoeopathic principles. Subjects were assessed by using Indian scale for Assessment of Autism (ISAA) and Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS) at baseline and every month up to one year. The outcome was analysed using Friedman test. Results: Median scores of ISAA and VSMS at baseline were 132 and 39 which were improved to 35.5 and 56, respectively, at the end of the study. There was a marked reduction in the total ISAA score of 34 patients (statistically significant with p < 0.001). The change of median scores from baseline of social relationship and reciprocity domain of ISAA, Social quotient improved from 41.5 to 10 and 32.8 to 82.7, respectively (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Individualised homoeopathic medicines are useful in improving social interaction in the cases of childhood autism. A controlled clinical trial is suggested as the arena of future research.Item Resolution of subdural hygroma with Homoeopathy(Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, 2024) Pal, Partha Pratim; Chatterjee, TaniaIntroduction: Subdural hygroma (SDH) is a collection of cerebrospinal fluid in the subdural space which may be idiopathic, traumatic or post-surgical occurring mostly in elderly patients. Case Summary: A 42-year-old female reported an acute complaint of compressing headache. The headache persisted even after initial prescriptions of Ruta graveolens 30C and 200C, which did not alleviate the condition. Further evaluation was done with a computed tomography scan, which revealed left-sided SDH. Tuberculinum 1M was prescribed, but even though the pain subsided, profuse, watery discharge began to ooze from both the ears and nose, which eventually stopped spontaneously. After six months, the headache recurred and Tuberculinum 1M was repeated. The magnetic resonance imaging scan initially showed subdural effusions, dural thickening and mild ischemic white matter changes and after homoeopathic treatment, no abnormality was reported. The management of SDH remains challenging, and documented cases of SDH treated with homoeopathic medicines could contribute to the evidence-based medical literature.Item Doctors’ day celebration and integration of Homoeopathy with mainstream healthcare(Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, 2024) Kaushik, SubhashNational Doctors' Day is observed in India on July 1st to commemorate the birth and death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Awardee, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a distinguished physician, freedom fighter, and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, India . This year’s theme for National Doctors' Day was, "Healing Hands, Caring Hearts," highlights the commitment, compassion, and empathy that doctors bring to their practice, underscoring their vital role in saving and enhancing lives. Practised for over a century in India, Homoeopathy has long been known for its role in enhancing the lives of people, in terms of gentle, holistic healing and long-lasting relief of long-term illnesses. It has, therefore, seamlessly integrated into the country’s traditional and cultural fabric, apart from the health scenario of the nation. Currently, there are approximately 3,00,000 registered homoeopathic doctors in India, with around 12,000 new practitioners joining the field annually. To a country that is seen as a hub of Homoeopathy affairs and infrastructure, it is both humbling and gratifying for every Indian homoeopath to receive plentiful wishes on the occasion of National Doctors’ Day from their patients. The all-inclusive approach of the nation on this day, where doctors of various medical streams are greeted and honoured by the people of India also throws light on how India endorses and celebrates its unique medical diversityItem Ichthyosis vulgaris successfully treated with individualised homoeopathic medicine Dulcamara 200C(Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, 2024) Singh, Lalith; Manoharan, Raja; Mitra, Sukanya; Purkait, RajibIntroduction: Ichthyosis vulgaris (IV) is a hereditary condition that often manifests in infancy but can also exist from birth. It is a recalcitrant disorder relapses often and even shows the least response to various therapeutic options. Extensive literature review have revealed a dearth of appropriate evidence-based documentation on treatment of ichthyosis in Homoeopathy. Case Summary: This is a case of IV in a 20-year-old male, manifested as widespread scaling and itching since childhood. Following homoeopathic principles, Dulcamara 200C was prescribed. Outcome related to impact on daily living (ORIDL) scale was used to evaluate the patient-reported outcome measure subjectively, and the improvement was assessed on the ORIDL scale (score +3). The improvement in quality of life (QoL) was evaluated using the dermatology life quality index questionnaire, and the QoL improved with a score reduced from ‘20’ to ‘0’. Photographs are presented as objective evidence. The Modified Naranjo Criteria for Homeopathy (MONARCH) was used to assess potential causal attribution. The overall score (+8) of MONARCH substantiated the possible causal attribution to homoeopathic treatment. In this instance, the case was successfully resolved with Dulcamara 200C in just 3 months, with no further recurrence. Conclusion: More research with controlled trials is warranted in the future to validate the role of Homoeopathy.Item A pragmatic, open-label study to evaluate the response of homoeopathic treatment in vitiligo(Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, 2024) Taneja, D; Mittal, R; Bhuvaneswari, RBackground: Homoeopathy is commonly used by patients suffering from vitiligo. The treatment response needs to be assessed on standardised scales in pragmatic settings. Objective: The study aimed to evaluate response to homoeopathic treatment in vitiligo severity and quality of life using the vitiligo area scoring index (VASI) score, Vitiligo European Task Force (VETF) score and dermatological life quality index (DLQI) score. Materials and Methods: This study was undertaken in dermatology outpatient departments at 11 research institutes of the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy. Participants, in the age group 18–60 years, any gender, presenting with at least one vitiligo skin patch above the size of 2 cm × 2 cm were included and invited to participate in the study and were regularly followed up over a period of one year. Participants completing one-year follow-up were included in a long-term assessment for another two years. Results: A total of 361 participants were enrolled, 266 completed one-year treatment; 139 continued treatment for additional twelve months, and 62 participants completed three years. Change in VASI and VETF area scores was not significant over one year. Post hoc test identified change in score for the VETF stage as significant at 6 months (p = 0.013), 9 months (p = 0.000), and 12 months (p = 0.000) from baseline. The spread score reduced significantly from baseline (p = 0.000), as also the change in mean scores of DLQI (p = 0.000), patient (p = 0.000) and physician global assessments (p = 0.000). Conclusion: The extent of depigmentation in vitiligo (staging) and spread decreased significantly along with improvement in quality of life with regular homoeopathic treatment.
